Chill Out with White Wines

Stay Cool with Summer Wines!

When the heat of summer arrives, fashionistas break out their white clothes, and we foodies break out our white wines. The white wines that are great for these hot summer days are not just any whites. We look to whites that are especially light and bright.

Refreshing & Juicy

We’re likely to be eating lighter foods--fresh fruit, grilled veggies, salads, cold dishes, sandwiches, simple shellfish, or other seafood. To complement these dishes, look for refreshing crispness, to provide a clean and crisp backdrop that enhances the colors of summer.

Texture and body-wise, look for something juicy. Summer foods will tend to be dressed with vinaigrette rather than a sauce, so wines with fairly high acidity are a good call. It’s okay to drink them refreshingly cool, a bit cooler than regular whites--even down to 40 degrees.

Test Your White Wine Wisdom

There are how many types of white wine...?
While there are numerous types of white wine, you’ll usually find seven main varieties:

Chardonnay
Sauvignon Blanc
Pinot Grigio
Riesling

Moscato
Gewürztraminer
Viognier

What is the most popular white wine varietal in the world...?
Wine producers love Chardonnay because it’s easy to grow and reliably profitable. These factors explain why California vineyards devote over 90,000 acres of land to this varietal alone, nearly 500% more than any other grape.

Chardonnay is a classic for drinkers because it offers a unique combination of reliable, high-quality taste and surprising versatility. While there are Chardonnay hallmarks (such as its fruity flavors and moderate acidity), what makes this varietal so unique is how it embraces its growing region's distinctiveness.
Interestingly, Chardonnays from warmer climates offer subtle notes of summery flavor and tropical aromas. At the same time, those from cooler regions present the palate with brighter acidity, citrus tastes, and a light, elegant body.
Does all white wine come from white grapes...?
Though white wine production separates grape from the skin, this does not mean that all whites originate from white grapes. In fact, some white wines derive from red grapes: To the surprise of many, it is the contact between grape and skin that makes wine red. Since grape juice inherently has no color, without skin contact, all varietals and blends would be white.
