📓 A Bourbon Short Course
Whiskey begins simply—just grains, water, and time. But the journey from humble harvest to amber elixir is anything but ordinary.
🌾 First, those grains are fermented, distilled, and laid to rest in wooden casks. Skip the aging, and what you have is raw, untamed moonshine. But give it time—along with the right ingredients, care, and a bit of magic—and you’ve got whiskey.
One of the most beloved forms? Bourbon. Bold, smooth, sweet, and unmistakably American. But what exactly gives bourbon its signature charm?
🌽 Let’s rewind to the mid-1700s. Scotch and Irish settlers arrived in what we now know as Virginia and Kentucky. With no barley in sight, they turned to corn—the native grain of the region—which brought a natural sweetness to their spirits. It worked so well, they kept distilling, and a new kind of whiskey was born.
🪨 The land helped, too. This part of the country sits on The Limestone Shelf—a geological gift that enriches the water with calcium while stripping out iron. Turns out, that high-calcium, low-iron water is ideal for distilling whiskey (and moonshine, if you’re feeling rebellious).
🔥 And then came the twist of fate. Enter Elijah Craig—a clergyman with a distillery and a storage problem. When fish barrels proved… less than ideal, he charred the inside of white oak casks to cleanse them. The result? A deep, smoky flavor that mellowed as it traveled—barrels marked "Bourbon County" floating down to New Orleans. Locals loved the smooth, oaky spirit, and began asking for more of "that whiskey from Bourbon."
📖 The rest, as they say, is history.
🎯 Ready to find your perfect bourbon?
Bourbon may have started in Kentucky, but these days it’s made all across the USA—and every bottle has a story to tell. By law, bourbon must be made with at least 51% corn and aged in new, charred white oak barrels for a minimum of two years. But what happens when distillers play with that other 49%? Magic.
Curious to taste how all of this comes together in the glass? Visit vomFASS to explore the wide world of bourbon—from young and lively to aged and complex. Your next favorite might just be one sip away.
